Table of Contents

Not just Children, but even adults are fascinated with the rain and its drops pitter-pattering across the wet earth. When it rains, the petrichor rises up, the 🐦 birds take shelter, the 🌈rainbow comes up, and the 🌳 trees start swaying to the merry tune of the thrumming of the rain drops.

However, not everyone likes the rain. In fact, a lot of them suffer from what is called Ombrophobia — an extreme fear of rain. Now, this fear of rain may have played a hand in the formation of the famous nursery rhyme “Rain, Rain, Go Away.”

As we know, Rain is a natural phenomenon that is indispensable to all forms of living beings. It is essential for all the plants, animals, and human beings. Rain falls down on earth from clouds as cold, tiny droplets that gives new life to trees and all living being. Rain is just as essential as the sun and it’s important for children to learn about rain in English.

Rain is the main theme of this fun nursery rhyme for children. Just like a lot of nursery rhymes, this rhyme is also old and can be traced all the way back to the ancient Greece. Although some dispute that the song originated in England, a lot of them hold the stance that this fun rhyme originated in the 17th century.

The rhyme “Rain, Rain, Go Away” has a central theme of yearning for bright, sunny days and outdoor adventures for children, much like the timeless Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Both rhymes capture the essence of childhood wonder and imagination. What’s important to note that it’s believed to have originated at a time when rainy days meant that children had to spend most of their time confined to indoors, instead of having to play outdoor games. The belief further exposits that singing “Rain, Rain, Go Away” somehow quelled the longing for outdoors.

One of the prominent reasons as to the popularity of the rhymes stems from its adaptability and recognition in a varied number of cultures. Rain, Rain, Go Away” is not only popular online but also found in old manuscripts. Its ability to connect with kids is a big part of why it’s so beloved, much like Mary Had a Little Lamb, which also has a special place in children’s hearts.

The general structure of the song encourages publishers and editors to illustrate the story in different forms, making use of vibrant colors and igniting the curiosity of the young. Nursery rhymes play an integral part in a child’s development and help them develop language skills. Poems and rhymes like these, such as the 🕷️ ITSY BITSY SPIDER 🕷️, not only pique the interest of children but also greatly contribute to their cognitive development. One of the many characteristics of this rhyme is the cadence it exhibits. The cadence of the rhyme helps the child in developing their memory retention abilities.

The “Rain, Rain, Go Away” rhyme benefits the children beyond their noetic functions. It instill a sense of empathy in them by eliciting their compassion for others. By envisioning themselves as someone who wants to play outdoors but is stranded indoors because of the rain, it evokes their empathy to think of others as well. Such children grow up to enjoy the simple things in life and the importance of community.

Rocco and Jojo’s Rain Adventures

Envision Rocco and Jojo playing 🏐 volleyball outside, when all of a sudden, dark clouds ⛈️ with thunder and lightning appear. It was a bright, sunny day 🌞 but all of a sudden, the dark cloud covers up the sky and starts growling across the firmaments.

The birds 🐦 stop twittering and the cows 🐄 take shelter immediately. Big pellets of rain start falling on the ground and it starts raining. Rocco and Jojo are no longer able to play as the ground is now wet and big drops of rain start pattering.

Now the two friends become dejected as they can no longer play outdoor games because of the rain. They didn’t want to go inside and play indoor games or practice rhymes. So, they start chanting “Rain, Rain, Go Away, come again another day” incessantly.

But it continued to rain cats and dogs as the skies growled and the thunder 🗲 clapped. Jojo and Rocco decide to resume playing in the rain, as it didn’t seem like the inclement weather could have gotten any better.

After a long while, the rain ceased and the dark, grey clouds gave way to a beautiful 🌈rainbow of a sky. It seemed like the chanting always helps in making the rain stop…eventually.

It’s a beautiful story with a silver lining to the clouds. When you sing this rhyme with your child, you can walk through the story with your imagination and narrate it to your child. They will also have a good opportunity to learn new words and expand on their imagination.

As you sing rhymes to children, you can ask them to describe the color of trees, the skies, and the birds. You can ask them, “Was the sky blue, grey, or red?” or “Was it rainy or bright?”

You can also talk to your child about the rain. Teach them how to discern between an outpouring of rain and a light drizzle. You can also teach them that if the clouds cover up the entire sky, it’s a cloudy day.

Other than this exercise being a good way for children to learn words and understand about weather, the song also undervalues an important lesson: we have to make do with what we have.

So, enjoy the weather and sing along the following rhyme:

Rain, rain, go away,
Come again another day,
Little Rocco wants to play.
Rain, rain, go away.

Rain, rain, go to Spain,
Never show your face again,
Rain, rain, go away.
Little Jojo wants to play.

Rain, rain, on the green grass,
Come again another day,
Rain, rain, on the rooftop,
Come again another day.

Rain, rain, go away,
Come again another day,
Little Rocco wants to play.
Rain, rain, go away.
