One way to recreate the magic of childhood can be through reading fairy tales, either in English or your native language.

A fairy tale is a special kind of story for kids that involves mystical characters, including fairies, dragons, elves, talking animals, and witches. Such tales in the English language bring some funny characters such as Jojo, Tobby, and Lana, and most end with an amicable fairy tale happy end.

It’s tall & tan & troubling.
Is that a wheat field?
Yes, that’s a wheat field!

We Can’t go over it,

What should we do?
Let’s go through the wheat field!

Fun Activities for “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” 🐻

This is a good way to get kids moving and engaged with the poem. It encourages them to act out the adventure while practicing motor skills, rhythm, and coordination. Here is how you can make the experience even more fun:

For the choruses, start having them pat their laps to the beat, and if they wish to do something more energetic, ask them to swing their arms as though walking down the path. As the time to sing “I am not afraid” arrives, point to yourself with pride and demonstrate it so they get the idea and are better able to get into the spirit of things.

Next, on the line “What’s that? “, make a “drum roll” on your lap or knees. This is just to build up the suspense of the big reveal. Afterwards, for “Is that…?” point both hands to yourself then hold your palms out towards the child. This signals them to say “Yes, that’s a…!” It might take some attempts for them to know, but by the second or third verse, they shall be ready to join!

For the line, “Can’t go over it, can’t go under it, what should we do?”, raise your hand, then move them downwards, and finally shrug with them out. Then hold your palms straight out to show them to answer them, “Let’s go through!”

Now, let us break it down by verse for even more fun:

  • 1st Rhyme:

Say “swoosh swoosh” while miming swiping away tall grass with your hands. Alternate each hand and push them to the side as you would be clearing a path. Do it slowly and steadily like half of a note rhythm.

  • 2nd Rhyme:

To “Splish Splash,” swim with your arms as though you are doing freestyle, and you can move your arms in quarter notes, so it’s still lively.

  • 3th Rhyme:

To demonstrate “Tippy-Toe,” walk on the floor with your index and middle fingers, as if you are tiptoeing.

When you get to the section about “What’s that?”, touch your face or the child’s face while singing “Feels like a nose.” and so on. Then throw your hands up in the air while screaming, “Yikes! It is a bear!” This theatrical action will have the kids interested and fully engaged in the play. Finally, as you finish the story, do the actions backward—pretend to “shut the door” to keep the bear out and act like you’re catching your breath as if you have escaped the bear’s chase.
